The world and job market changed dramatically in the spring of 2020. There are millions of people whose employment status was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and, because of that, managing your job search and career is more important than ever.
The foundational aspects of a job search, like your resume, LinkedIn profile and networking remain important, but the content and your approach to finding your next opportunity needs to be reflective of the “new” work environment. This includes being effective with communicating relevant information virtually in networking conversations and interviews.
You need to be confident with your abilities (TRUST yourself), establish processes that will help lead you to success (TRUST your plan) and develop productive relationships that are based on mutual TRUST.
TRUST can be developed and strengthened with focus on the 5-aspects of the TRUST Success Model:
Transparency: This is about being honest with yourself regarding your strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You need to have a “Personal Brand” so you and your contacts can clearly and concisely communicate what you offer an employer to get you to the best place you can be as quickly as possible.
Results: You need to present the results you’ve delivered clearly and concisely and this should come through in your networking conversations, interviews, and in all your job search marketing materials... especially your resume and LinkedIn profile.
Understanding: The job market today is more challenging than ever, especially if you are mid-late career. You need to understand all aspects of a successful job search, including social media and LinkedIn in particular.
Simplify: There is a lot to think about and do for your job search. When you get opportunities to interview, this can feel overwhelming and very stressful. You can reduce your stress level by simplifying the process and mastering the 3Ps for successful interviewing: Prepare, Process, Practice
Team: It’s estimated that more than 70% of jobs are landed through networking. Looking for a new job is hard. It can be discouraging and frustrating. You need to have a good support system and a strong network to help you get to your next great opportunity. Isolation is the enemy of the unemployed.
Separately and collectively, each aspect of the “TRUST Success Model” outlined above can be developed and become the foundation of a successful job search and career regardless of market conditions.
